below are a few of the most common questions
we receive specific to the arc classics
voyage. if you don’t see your question, or if you
would rather speak to us directly, please call
any time at 800.317.6789 or +1.941.924.6789.
What is the main focus of the arc
classics voyage?
The arc classics sailing expedition is a fast-paced sailing voyage
that will take you from Athens in Greece, throughout the Greek Islands and
across to Sicily and Itlay, ending in Rome. The main focus
of this program is on the classical history and culture of the region as well
as exploration and sail training. Over
the 28-days, we visit over 10 different ports of call and each landfall
provides a totally different experience, which varies with the local traditions
and languages spoken.
What certifications will I earn?
During the program you will complete our specially created
classics course and your grade will be reflected on an Arc transcript. You
will also gain a lot of sailing experience aboard our modern schooner. Through
International Yachtmaster Training (IYT) you'll earn the International Crew
Certificate and your sea time and miles will also become officially logged
for future use should you decide to build on your certifications.
How many people go on this program?
The Arc classics voyage will sail with a maximum of 24 students
and six staff members.
What type of boat will I be on?
The Arc classics voyage is be run exclusively aboard our
112-foot schooner, S/Y Argo.
Where do we all sleep?
From the moment you arrive, you'll move aboard your yacht and live on board full time. If you've never lived aboard a yacht before, you'll find that there are a lot of differences to living on land! What's the head? Where’s the lazarette? How do you pump the bilge?
Who will be my staff?
Six staff members live with you aboard the vessel full-time.
There will be your skipper, a first mate and second mate who are also advanced-level
sailors. In addition we'll have an educator who specializes in the classics.
The other two staff members possess a range of skills, such as medical training
and galley prep. It takes a lot to plan 3 meals a day for 30 people for 28-days!
What's the weather like?
Weather in the Mediterranean during this time of year is very pleasant, as it is typically warm and dry with an average air temperature of 75°F and water temperature of 73°F.
How can parents find out what's going on aboard the program?
The easiest way is for students to place a quick call home
to let Mom and Dad in on what's going on! Sometimes this doesn't happen though
so we developed a trip update system in which, at the end of each
day, the student leader writes a few remarks in the log. At various
times (typically once every 3 or 4 days) this is typed up and posted on the
Arc Academic Expeditions website. This way, Mom and Dad can vicariously live
aboard too!
Do I need any specific immunizations for this program?
No special immunizations are required to visit this area of
Europe. We do ask that all students check that their Tetanus
and Hepatitis B inoculations are up-to-date.
What about the travel arrangements?
Students come from all points of the compass! (typically, around 11 countries and 35 states are represented), so coordinated air travel is of vital importance.
For this reason, we highly recommend that students flying to the Caribbean
book through Leah Hernandez at Reservation Services International as she regularly
obtain the best fares available, arranges group seating and provides close monitoring
on travel days in case of flight difficulties. As airlines often change their
schedules, Arc Academic Expeditions cannot be responsible for the coordination
of air flights that were not booked through Leah.
The group initially meets in
one of New York’s International airports
and then flies together to Athen, Greece. The return flight to the US will
be from Rome, Italy.

Do I need a passport or any special visas?
All students must travel with a passport valid for a minimum of six months after the date of departure from Europe. Citizens of the USA and Canada can stay up to 90 days without a visa. Visitors from certain other countries may require visas to enter some of the countries that we visit. To confirm whether or not a visa is required, please contact Leah Hernandez, our travel coordinator, or your local travel agent.
